Background: write up

Personality:
There are people who make a good first impression, and then there's Kate. Like many a problem teen, Kate is a smart-mouthed, sarcastic ball of tension who seems to revel in flouting and breaking rules. She seems to constantly be moving, as though always needing to be somewhere new. Whether she's tapping a foot or actually walking / running, Kate seems incapable of staying still for more than a minute at a time, much to the frustration of just about everyone around her.

Despite all the irritation Kate broadcasts to the world, she rarely bothers to shout or scream at others. She usually seems pretty tight-lipped, never really saying too much at one time, adding to the impression that she doesn't care about anything. But plenty of anger bubbles under the surface, expressed in many of her defiant behaviours – which are largely a desire for distraction from her own thoughts and pain. Losing her parents and not getting the necessary support to deal with it upended her entire life, pulling her away from her ambitions and fragmenting her remaining relationships. Although she still enjoys human company – an extrovert at heart – she trusts very few of them thanks to her bad experiences with her recent friend group and the man associated with them.

Though she works hard, her ambition to become an athlete died with her parents, and now Kate uses more of her energy to seek distraction than true fulfilment. In fact, the only other thing which truly seems to ignite anything in her is the happiness of her brother, as she believes her parents would want her to take care of him. She doesn't have many positive beliefs. She has little faith in anyone with social power — the rich, the lawmakers, adults with influence over children — and, fitting her general cynicism, Kate also thinks that her distrust of these ultimately doesn't matter because she, like any of the other "unimportant" people, lack the power to change or opt out of them.

These beliefs are not held as tightly to her chest as her personal fears and worries, and are something which can usually be pried loose with a conversation over drinks, where Kate is the most relaxed. That said, it isn't always easy, as Kate knows she can distract others from her own details by getting them to talk about themselves, and gladly makes use of questions to have them talk about themselves instead. That said, when people display points of view which are not her own, Kate has trouble understanding how they even got there, but generally respects them (within reason).

And, ultimately, that fact helps betray the truth: that Kate is something of a people person. An extrovert. Someone who genuinely cares about others but is trying to separate herself from them in a bid to spare herself more pain. This need for people around her is made obvious in the way she seems to be glued to audiobooks, podcasts, and anything which involves listening to others speaking when she's confined to spend time alone. Her active nature is also very obvious in the fact that, despite her tendency to party, she is an early riser, and tries to watch the sunrise as often as possible (a habit carried over from childhood). That lifestyle also results in something of a passion for coffee, as well as zero patience for cooking — which may be why most of her meals are salads, stir fry, anything where she can just chuck vegetables in a bowl and consider herself done.

After all, who has time to cook when there's work to be done?

Abilities:
— power sensing.
Pretty much what it says on the tin! Kate has the ability to see and sense powers within other people (or within objects, but she is unaware of that as it isn't a thing in her world) through colours. Similar to how heat mapping works, but the colours correspond to powers instead of temperatures. She can pinpoint flow of power and how a power may be used, allowing her to provide information on incoming attacks or "weaknesses" (such as someone running out of their power, etc). As it is dependent on her vision, she can only sense anything within eyesight — no peeking through walls or anything else — and can cause sensory overload if she's in a place with high concentrations of powers. Upgraded in Jigokucho to allow her to switch it off at will.

note: The moderator team would like to limit Kate's ability to sense the powers of others to moments when she is emotionally charged by a situation. i.e., events and other potentially dire predicaments.
